For me this work is about creating a home, both as a physical space as well as a cultural space within Australia. By gathering these varied ceramic objects, I aim to create a space that acknowledges the viewpoint of otherness. By looking closer at what is inside, beneath and between things that reveal hidden aspect of cultural identity to create emotional intensity and generate the potential for multiculturalism.

Finalist: Blacktown City Art Prize - Ritual Tortoise Cakes
Ceramic Installation, 3x70x80cm

As a child, Jayanto would sit and watch his beautiful Peranakan mother delicately made the red tortoise cake. These cakes significant for celebrate the Lunar New Year and announced piece and good luck. In Ritual Tortoise Cakes, Jayanto recreates these into colourful ceramic cakes to express personal experiences of 'otherness'.

In my work, I acknowledge the impact of cross-cultural ideas on our individual world concepts. Through sharing my culture and ritual, in this work I aim to focus the timeless wisdom of meditation towards the Australian landscape – seeking to capture the quiet, meditative qualities of grace and balance evident in our natural environment. The act of creating this sculpture has been one of respectful humbling before nature, combined with the wish of new awareness of the healing and nurturing our urban environment deserves.

Collaboration performance interactive installation
The Peranakan Project is an interactive performance installation, focusing on the themes of remembrance and holding on to the disappearing histories of our Peranakan culture within today’s Australian landscape. Ritual Togetherness
Incense Sticks, red thread
6 - 30 April 2019

Responding to the theme of the natural and cultural environment of the Cooks River, I would like to create a site-specific installation reflecting the diversity within the Bayside Council Residents. As a Peranakan immigrant living in Sydney, I would like to introduce my mixed Asian culture and rituals to my new homeland through colours and storytelling. By blending local history with relevant stories connected with cultural environment, I hope to bring ordinary object into today’s contemporary world. https://www.bayside.nsw.gov.au/area/whats/bayside-arts-festival

This installation is associated with ritual, mediation, time and healing that places an awareness of aloneness in the art process as a cultivated modernity. This perspective of healing through the process of art and choice of materials informs my Chinese’s view of offerings, temple ritual, church and ceremonies. This proposes a connection from past to present and from the temporary to the eternal.

Offerings is an exploration of contemporary identity and cultural diversity. The symbolic ceramic sculptural objects are reminiscent of the offerings made by ordinary everyday Indonesians. Intertwined with western mythology, the work offers a sentiment of mixed spirituality and sharing. With an emphasis on colour, my work delivers a personal expression of identity and pride culminating in a celebration of liberation and creative freedom.

Lesley Weber (President, Central Coast Potters) and Jayanto Damanik Tan (recent graduate, National Art School), express a common opinion that "to doing nothing is not an option" when it comes to human rights. This exhbition is a reflection on individual social events and historical facts that focus on the human struggle for survival in an often unjust world.

Catherine Croll, Founding Director at Cultural Partnerships Australia and Director, Special Projects at Red Gate Gallery will be guest speaker at the opening reception on September 3rd, 6-8pm.

This installation reflects on history, spirituality, transitions and myth.
In Garden Arrangement, I burned the yellow papers in the ceramic bowls to pay homage to family tradition and embrace my new culture in Australia. When Anie asked me, why I always hang my works. My response was I have always drifted from time to time, and I am still waiting for the moment to land,  like Tony's wooden sculptures remaining firm on the ground.

6 February - 20 February  2016
The Old Rum Store, Kensington Street, Chippendale 2008 NSW
In 2016, the City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival celebrates twenty years of vibrant festivities. The work was inspired by my childhood in Indonesia, watching my mother preparing for Chinese New Year. In my family, Chinese New Year is a time of much celebration, when people gather together having a good time and enjoying exotic dishes. The installation reflects the memories of those times and is also an offering to the natural world to help make a spiritual connection with the ancestors.

Folding papers and Eat Dumpling with Children Hospital - Les Ateliers Du Coeur at Lausanne, Switzerland
Joss Papers
 14th November 2015
The project references the influence of cross cultural ideas and the world that surrounds us. And about explore issues of trust, intimacy and self-awareness through sharing activities. By sharing activities - fold papers and eat dumpling, the audience create a memorial to everyday life. Audience experiences a different culture and embracing values what the world has offered.
Fold papers and eat dumpling were activities have been used for thousands of years in Chinese tradition. Also known as “excuse” for people gather together having a good time and enjoying exotic dishes.
By created these pieces gave me a sense of connection with another culture and an appreciation for previous generations' influence on our lives.

This work was inspired by a visit to my sister in 2013 - when she folded a piece of origami joss paper for her husband. This immediately brought back a flood of wonderful childhood memories. It took me back to that short period of time when such simple things as folding paper could occupy a child's attention. Today this origami reflects the memories of those times and also pays homage to her following her recent death from breast cancer in 2014.

This lantern made of used tea bags as symbolise the remembrance of the good times that were shared together in life (celebrated of Chinese New Year). The party may be over but the memories linger like bright lantern shining through. Melepaskan Rindu - Conversation at Pondok Waginem
3 minutes video
A video work reflecting the essential dilemmas between a mother and son. By having slept on his mother's grave, Jayanto is trying to reconnecting with his mother by spirituality. This refers to a physical act of destruction in responses to internal emotional struggles and ceremoniously about letting go and making a new life in another country without abandoning the past.
To remembrance of the May Riots 1998, Jayanto invited families of the victims of May Riots 1998 to gather in the cemetery Pondok Ranggon, Cibubur to share their stories. At the end of performance, ceramics are given to the families of the victims to take it home as souvenir.
